Homemade Ketchup

My boyfriend loooves Ketchup! There is hardly any dish he eats without Ketchup. Therefore I wanted to create a healthy, less sugared version. Even though the outcome does not taste like the original ketchup, it tastes delicious and can also be used as a pasta sauce!

What you need:

  • 1 kg Tomatoes
  • 2 Red Onions
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 Bunch Fresh Basil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Powder
  • 1 tbsp Curry
  • 80 g Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 75 ml White Wine Vinegar

First, chop onions and garlic. Then, wash tomatoes and also chop them into small pieces. Put some oil into a big pot, add onions and garlic and braise them lightly. After two minutes, add tomatoes, sugar, mustard powder, curry powder and vinegar. Season it with salt and pepper. Cover the pot and let the tomato sauce simmer with low heat for 40 min. thereby again and again stir around. When the ketchup is almost ready add fresh basil and let it simmer for 5 min. Then, put the whole ketchup into a blender and mix it – this helps to mash all the tomatoes and therefore the Ketchup becomes more viscous. Now pour the ketchup into sterile glasses. Let it cool down and keep it in the fridge. Due to the fact that this recipe does not use any preservatives the ketchup should be consumed within two weeks.

Great success!
